چکیده

A National Emergency Plan was set up in Italy after the Chernobyl accident, to cope with the following nuclear risk sources: accidents in foreign nuclear power plants or aboard nuclearpropelled ships, falling of satellites using nuclear power units, transportation of radioactive materials. Moreover, this plan gives the general requirements of the emergency preparedness and response to be implemented into the local planning (Provincial Emergency Plan), on the basis of reference accidents for research reactors, nuclear power and reprocessing plants (shut down) in Italy. However in the National Emergency Plan are not considered, neither for local scale nor for the national one, the accidents with radiation sources, used for a wide variety of purposes in industry, medicine and research. Besides, after the events of 11 September 2001, it is raised the awareness of the risks created by radiation sources, because of their potential use for malevolent purposes (exposure of public to radiation or use of a source in a radiological dispersion device, commonly referred to as “dirty bomb”). Moreover, for a terrorist action, the personal danger from handling powerful radiation sources can not be seen as an effective deterrent. It is clear that a re-evaluation of risks involved and a planning of the interventions to protect the public is needed as also stated by the requirements set up in the new standard proposed by the IAEA. In this paper the radiological consequences of radioactivity dispersion by using conventional explosive have been evaluated for the main applications of radioactive sources.

Types of radiation mass casualties and their management.

Management of radiation mass casualty exposure that may occur as a result of nuclear or radiation accident will depend on the type of accident, and of the knowledge about the actual radiation exposure situation for those who might be involved. Management of the public after an accident in a nuclear or radiation installation will follow existing specific emergency plans, and will take advantage ...

Optimization of Radiological Protection in Pediatric Patients Undergoing Common Conventional Radiological Procedures: Effectiveness of Increasing the Film to Focus Distance (FFD)

Background Increasing the x-ray film to focus distance (FFD), has been recommended as a practical dose optimization tool for patients undergoing conventional radiological procedures. In the previous study, we demonstrated a 32% reduction in absorbed dose is achievable due to increasing the FFD from 100 to 130 cm during pediatric chest radiography. The aim of this study was to examine whether in...

Radiological Emergencies and the Medical Physicist

The widespread damage and loss of life caused by the March 11th earthquake-generated tsunami in Japan, and the resulting emergency at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility, raise once again the question of the role of knowledgeable civilians in responding to public health emergencies. In the case of a radiological emergency, medical physicists are among the more knowledgeable individuals...

Compliance of Radiation Dose and Image Quality in a Nigerian Teaching Hospital with the European Guidelines for Pediatric Screen-Film Chest Radiography

Introduction Blue light is a part of the spectrum with the highest energy content, which can reach the retina. The damage that it can cause to the retina is called photochemical or blue-light retinal injury. For the retinal injury assessment of the photochemical and aphakic retinal hazards in the wavelength range of 300-700 nm, use of effective spectral radiance limits (W.m-2.sr-1) seems to be...
